Creamy One Pot Sausage Penne Pasta
A hearty and comforting pasta dish that is easy to make and even easier to clean up.
recipesbynani.comThere is nothing quite like a warm bowl of pasta after a long day. This sausage penne is one of my absolute favorites because it all cooks in one single pot. The creamy tomato sauce clings perfectly to the noodles, and the savory sausage adds so much flavor to every single bite.
My biggest tip for this recipe is to watch your heat carefully while the pasta cooks. Since the starch from the noodles helps thicken the sauce, you want a gentle simmer rather than a rolling boil. It creates the perfect texture every single time.
๐งบ Ingredients
- 1 pound Italian sausage, casing removed
- 1 small yellow onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 12 ounces dry penne pasta
- 2 cups fresh baby spinach
- 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
- Salt and black pepper to taste
๐ฉโ๐ณInstructions
- 1
Place a large pot or deep skillet over medium heat and add the sausage. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as you go.
- 2
Add the onion to the pot with the sausage and cook until it is soft and translucent.
- 3
Stir in the garlic and cook for about one minute until it smells fragrant.
- 4
Pour in the tomato sauce, chicken broth, and heavy cream. Give everything a good stir to combine.
- 5
Add the dry penne pasta to the liquid. Make sure the pasta is mostly submerged.
- 6
Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Cover the pot and cook for about 12 to 15 minutes, or until the pasta is tender and the sauce has thickened.
- 7
Remove the lid and stir in the baby spinach until it wilts into the sauce.
- 8
Stir in the parmesan cheese and season with salt and pepper before serving.
๐ก Tips
This dish is best served immediately while the sauce is creamy. If you have leftovers, keep them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. When reheating, add a small splash of water or broth to loosen up the sauce as pasta tends to soak up liquid while sitting.
