There is nothing quite like the smell of fresh bread baking in the kitchen. These sourdough burger buns have become a favorite in my house because they hold up so well to a juicy patty without being too dense.

Since this recipe uses active sourdough starter, make sure yours is nice and bubbly before you begin. It is the secret to getting that perfect rise and the light texture everyone loves.

๐Ÿงบ Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup active sourdough starter
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten (for egg wash)

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸณInstructions

  1. 1

In a large bowl, whisk together your sourdough starter, warm water, sugar, and melted butter.

  2. 2

Add the flour and salt, mixing until a shaggy dough begins to form.

  3. 3

Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8 to 10 minutes until it feels smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm spot for 6 to 8 hours or until it has doubled in size.

  5. 5

Divide the dough into four equal pieces and shape them into smooth balls. Flatten them slightly to form bun shapes.

  6. 6

Place the buns on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let them rise again for another 2 hours.

  7. 7

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

  8. 8

Brush the tops of the buns with the beaten egg.

  9. 9

Bake for 18 to 20 minutes until the tops are golden brown. Let them cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Store these in an airtight bag at room temperature for up to three days. If you have leftovers, they make excellent toasted sandwich bread or garlic knots. You can also freeze them for up to a month if you wrap them tightly.
