There is nothing quite like the smell of apples and cinnamon filling the kitchen on a slow afternoon. This recipe is a favorite in my house because it takes very little effort to turn simple fruit into something spreadable and sweet.

My best tip is to use a mix of apple varieties for the best depth of flavor. If you prefer a smoother texture, you can use an immersion blender right in the crockpot once the apples are soft.

๐Ÿงบ Ingredients

  • 5 pounds apples, cored and chopped
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸณInstructions

  1. 1

Place the chopped apples into your slow cooker.

  2. 2

Add the granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and salt to the pot.

  3. 3

Stir everything together until the apples are well coated.

  4. 4

Cover and cook on low heat for 8 to 10 hours, stirring occasionally.

  5. 5

Remove the lid during the last hour of cooking to let the moisture evaporate and the mixture thicken.

  6. 6

Use an immersion blender to puree the mixture until it is smooth.

  7. 7

Let the apple butter cool completely before transferring it to jars for storage.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Store your apple butter in clean glass jars in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. It also freezes perfectly for several months if you want to save some for later. Serve it spread over warm toast, stirred into oatmeal, or alongside a sharp cheddar cheese.
