There is something so comforting about a warm snickerdoodle straight from the oven. These cookies are a family favorite because they are simple to make but always feel like a special treat.

My secret for getting that signature tangy flavor and soft texture is adding a little bit of cream of tartar to the dough. It makes all the difference in the world, so please do not skip it.

🧺 Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 3/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons white sugar
  • 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon

👩‍🍳Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. 2

In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and 1 1/2 cups of sugar together until the mixture is light and fluffy.

  3. 3

Add the eggs and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and beat well.

  4. 4

Stir in the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt until a soft dough forms.

  5. 5

In a small shallow bowl, mix the 3 tablespoons of sugar and the ground cinnamon together.

  6. 6

Roll the dough into small balls, about one tablespoon each, and roll them in the cinnamon sugar mixture until coated.

  7. 7

Place the balls on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 10 to 12 minutes until the edges are set but the centers still look soft.

  8. 8

Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for five minutes before moving them to a wire rack to cool completely.

💡 Tips

Store your cookies in an airtight container at room temperature to keep them soft for up to five days. If you want to freeze them, you can keep the unbaked dough balls in the freezer and just add an extra minute to the baking time when you are ready to eat.
