Classic New Orleans Shrimp Po' Boys
These famous crispy fried shrimp sandwiches are stuffed with fresh toppings and a tangy remoulade sauce.
recipesbynani.comNothing beats the crunch of a perfectly fried shrimp Po' Boy. These sandwiches are a New Orleans staple, combining crispy golden shrimp with cool, crunchy vegetables and a bold sauce that brings everything together in one delicious bite.
I love making these at home because they are much more affordable than buying them out and honestly taste even better. The secret is in the Cajun seasoning and the quick shallow fry, which gives you that perfect texture without all the mess of deep frying.
๐งบ Ingredients
- 500g medium shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 1/2 cup all purpose flour
- 1/2 cup fine cornmeal or cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
- 1 large egg, beaten
- Oil for shallow frying
- 4 French bread rolls or long crusty rolls
- Shredded lettuce
- Sliced tomatoes
- Sliced pickles
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon Dijon or yellow mustard
- 1 teaspoon horseradish cream
- 1 tablespoon pickle juice
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- A few dashes of hot sauce
๐ฉโ๐ณInstructions
- 1
In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, mustard, horseradish, pickle juice, paprika, garlic, and hot sauce to make the remoulade. Set it aside in the fridge.
- 2
Pat your shrimp dry with paper towels. In a shallow dish, combine the flour, cornmeal, and Cajun seasoning.
- 3
Dip each shrimp into the beaten egg, then toss them in the flour mixture until well coated.
- 4
Heat about an inch of oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the shrimp in batches for about 2 minutes per side until they are golden and crispy. Drain them on paper towels.
- 5
Slice your rolls open and toast them lightly. Spread a generous amount of remoulade on the bread.
- 6
Fill the rolls with the crispy shrimp, lettuce, tomato slices, and pickles. Serve immediately while everything is still hot and fresh.
๐ก Tips
Store any leftover remoulade in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. If you have leftover fried shrimp, reheat them in a hot oven or air fryer for a few minutes to bring back the crunch before assembling your next sandwich.
