Everyone loves a big scoop of creamy mashed potatoes on their plate at Thanksgiving. They are simple to make and bring so much joy to the table. I always find that a little extra butter makes them taste just like the ones my grandmother used to make.

My top tip for the best texture is to use a potato masher or a ricer while the potatoes are still quite warm. If you try to mash them once they cool down, they tend to get a bit gluey rather than fluffy and light.

๐Ÿงบ Ingredients

  • 5 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup whole milk or heavy cream, warmed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Fresh chives for garnish

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸณInstructions

  1. 1

Place the potato chunks in a large pot and cover them with cold water by about an inch.

  2. 2

Bring the water to a boil over medium heat and cook until the potatoes are very tender when poked with a fork, which takes about 20 minutes.

  3. 3

Drain the water well and return the potatoes to the hot pot to let any extra moisture evaporate.

  4. 4

Add the softened butter and begin mashing the potatoes.

  5. 5

Slowly pour in the warmed milk or cream while continuing to mash until you reach your desired consistency.

  6. 6

Season with the salt and pepper, then stir well to combine.

  7. 7

Serve warm with a little extra butter and a sprinkle of fresh chives on top.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

You can keep these warm in a slow cooker on the low setting for up to two hours if your oven space is full. If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days.
