There is nothing quite like a mug of homemade Mexican hot chocolate on a chilly evening. It is so much better than the powdery packets from the store because you can really taste the deep chocolate and the warmth of the spices.

My favorite trick for this recipe is to whisk it really well right before serving. Getting that little bit of foam on top makes the drink feel special and professional. I hope you enjoy it as much as my family does.

๐Ÿงบ Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 3 ounces bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch ground nutmeg
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Whipped cream for topping

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸณInstructions

  1. 1

Pour the milk into a small saucepan and place it over medium heat until it starts to steam, but do not let it reach a rolling boil.

  2. 2

Add the chopped chocolate and sugar to the warm milk, stirring constantly with a whisk until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth.

  3. 3

Stir in the cinnamon, nutmeg, cayenne pepper, and vanilla extract.

  4. 4

Continue to whisk the mixture vigorously for about one minute to create a light foam on the surface.

  5. 5

Pour the hot chocolate into mugs and serve immediately with a dollop of whipped cream if you like.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

You can store any leftovers in the fridge for a day or two and just reheat it gently on the stove. If you want a richer drink, swap half of the milk for heavy cream. A cinnamon stick makes a lovely garnish for serving guests.
