This green chile chicken pozole is one of my favorite comfort meals to make when the weather starts to turn cold. It is packed with shredded chicken and chewy hominy, all brought together by a bright and flavorful green chile broth that warms you from the inside out.

My mama taught me how to make this soup, and it has become a staple in my kitchen. My best tip is to let the soup simmer slowly so all those lovely spices have enough time to really meld together before you serve it.

๐Ÿงบ Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large white onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cans diced green chiles
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cans white hominy, drained and rinsed
  • 3 cups cooked shredded chicken
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish
  • 1 lime, cut into wedges

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸณInstructions

  1. 1

Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat and add the diced onion.

  2. 2

Cook the onion until it is soft, then stir in the garlic, green chiles, cumin, and oregano for about one minute.

  3. 3

Pour the chicken broth into the pot and bring the mixture to a gentle boil.

  4. 4

Add the hominy and shredded chicken, then lower the heat and let everything simmer for 20 minutes.

  5. 5

Season the soup with salt and pepper to your liking.

  6. 6

Ladle the soup into bowls and finish each serving with fresh cilantro and a squeeze of lime juice.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

You can serve this with shredded cabbage, sliced radishes, or cubes of creamy avocado on top. If you have leftovers, keep them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. The flavors actually taste even better the next day.
