Classic Homemade Apple Crisp
This is my go to apple crisp recipe that features tender, jammy apples under a generous, buttery oat topping.
recipesbynani.comThis apple crisp recipe has been a staple in my kitchen for years. There is something special about the combination of warm, cinnamon scented apples and a golden, crunchy topping that makes it the perfect treat for a chilly fall evening.
I love serving this right out of a cast iron skillet for a rustic touch. My biggest tip is to not worry about peeling the apples, as the skins soften perfectly while baking and save you a good amount of prep time in the kitchen.
๐งบ Ingredients
- 6 cups apples, diced
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon all purpose flour
- 1/2 cup salted butter, melted
- 1 cup brown sugar, lightly packed
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 3/4 cup rolled oats
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
๐ฉโ๐ณInstructions
- 1
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
- 2
In a large bowl, toss the diced apples with the granulated sugar, cinnamon, and the first tablespoon of flour until they are evenly coated.
- 3
Transfer the apple mixture into a 9x9 baking dish or a cast iron skillet.
- 4
In a separate bowl, combine the melted butter, brown sugar, flour, oats, vanilla, and salt.
- 5
Stir the topping ingredients together with a spoon or fork, then use your hands to pinch the mixture into crumbles.
- 6
Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the top of the apples.
- 7
Bake for 40 to 45 minutes until the topping is golden brown and you can see the apple juices bubbling and becoming jammy around the edges.
- 8
Remove from the oven and let it stand for 10 to 15 minutes before serving to allow the juices to thicken.
๐ก Tips
This dessert is best served warm with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. If you have leftovers, keep them in an airtight container in the fridge and reheat them in the oven or microwave to bring back that crisp texture.
