There is something so comforting about a warm sweet potato casserole. The natural sweetness of the potatoes pairs perfectly with a buttery brown sugar topping, and adding a layer of marshmallows on top makes it a real favorite with kids and adults alike.

My best advice for this dish is to use fresh sweet potatoes rather than canned ones. Roasting them brings out a much deeper flavor, and the texture stays perfectly creamy instead of getting mushy.

๐Ÿงบ Ingredients

  • 3 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/3 cup all purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons cold butter, cubed
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸณInstructions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly grease a baking dish.

  2. 2

Boil the sweet potato cubes in a large pot of water until they are very tender, then drain them well.

  3. 3

Mash the cooked potatoes in a large bowl with the granulated sugar, 4 tablespoons of softened butter, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon until smooth.

  4. 4

Spread the potato mixture evenly into your prepared baking dish.

  5. 5

In a separate small bowl, mix the brown sugar, flour, cold butter, and pecans until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.

  6. 6

Sprinkle the pecan mixture over the top of the potatoes.

  7. 7

Bake for 20 minutes, then remove from the oven and scatter the marshmallows over the top.

  8. 8

Place the dish back in the oven for 5 to 10 minutes until the marshmallows are lightly toasted and golden.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

If you want to save time, you can prep the mashed potato base a day ahead and keep it in the fridge. For storage, keep any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. It tastes just as good warmed up the next day.
