There is something so special about a pan of cheesy potatoes coming out of the oven. This recipe is a classic favorite in my home because the potatoes get so soft while the sauce turns into a golden, bubbly layer of goodness that everyone loves.

My secret to getting this just right is to slice the potatoes thinly and evenly so they cook at the same time. If you have a mandoline slicer, it makes the prep work go very fast, but a sharp knife works perfectly well too.

๐Ÿงบ Ingredients

  • 2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸณInstructions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.

  2. 2

Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat, then whisk in the flour and cook for one minute.

  3. 3

Slowly pour in the milk while whisking constantly until the mixture thickens and is smooth.

  4. 4

Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the salt, pepper, garlic powder, and half of the shredded cheese until melted.

  5. 5

Arrange half of your potato slices in the bottom of the prepared dish in an overlapping pattern.

  6. 6

Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.

  7. 7

Add the remaining potato slices and pour the rest of the sauce on top.

  8. 8

Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.

  9. 9

Remove the foil, sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top, and bake for another 15 to 20 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

These potatoes are best served warm right out of the oven. You can store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. To reheat, just pop them in the microwave or a warm oven until they are heated through.
