This chocolate buttercream is a classic recipe that I reach for whenever I want to make a special dessert. It has a deep cocoa flavor that balances perfectly with just the right amount of sweetness, making it a favorite for birthdays and parties.

My top tip for success is to make sure your butter is at room temperature before you start. If the butter is too cold, it will be hard to get that smooth, fluffy texture we all love.

๐Ÿงบ Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch of salt

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸณInstructions

  1. 1

Beat the softened butter in a large bowl with an electric mixer until it is creamy and pale.

  2. 2

Sift the powdered sugar and cocoa powder together into a separate bowl to remove any lumps.

  3. 3

Add half of the sugar and cocoa mixture to the butter and beat on low speed until combined.

  4. 4

Pour in the cream, vanilla extract, and salt, then add the rest of the sugar mixture.

  5. 5

Increase the speed to medium and beat the frosting for about three minutes until it is light and fluffy.

  6. 6

Add a little more cream if the frosting is too thick, or a bit more powdered sugar if it needs to be stiffer.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Store any leftover frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. When you are ready to use it again, let it come back to room temperature and give it a quick whip with your mixer to get it fluffy again.
