There is something so comforting about coming home to the smell of spices simmering in the kitchen. This butter chicken recipe is one of my go to dinners because it is incredibly gentle on the schedule while still delivering deep, warm flavors that the whole family enjoys.

My biggest tip for this one is to make sure you use high quality tomato puree to get that beautiful color and thickness. Adding the cream right at the very end ensures the sauce stays silky and does not curdle while it cooks.

๐Ÿงบ Ingredients

  • 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite sized pieces
  • 1 large yellow onion, finely diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 teaspoons garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish
  • Cooked basmati rice for serving

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸณInstructions

  1. 1

Place the chicken pieces into the bottom of your slow cooker.

  2. 2

Add the diced onion, garlic, ginger, garam masala, cumin, chili powder, turmeric, and salt over the chicken.

  3. 3

Pour the tomato sauce over everything and top with the cubes of butter.

  4. 4

Cover and cook on low for 4 to 6 hours or on high for 2 to 3 hours until the chicken is tender and cooked through.

  5. 5

Stir in the heavy cream right before serving to give the sauce its signature creamy texture.

  6. 6

Serve hot over fluffy basmati rice and garnish with plenty of fresh cilantro.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

This dish stores beautifully in the fridge for up to three days. It actually tastes even better the next day after the spices have had time to meld. Serve it with warm garlic naan to scoop up every last bit of the sauce.
