If you went to school in the nineties, you probably remember these iconic peanut butter bars. They have that perfect soft texture that just melts in your mouth, and the combination of salty peanut butter with a rich chocolate topping is hard to beat.

I love making these for family gatherings because they disappear so quickly. My best tip is to let them set completely in the fridge before you try to cut them, otherwise, the frosting might get a little messy on your knife.

๐Ÿงบ Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons milk

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸณInstructions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly grease a 9 by 13 inch baking pan.

  2. 2

In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until smooth.

  3. 3

Beat in the eggs, one teaspoon of vanilla, and the creamy peanut butter until well combined.

  4. 4

Stir in the flour and salt until you have a smooth dough.

  5. 5

Spread the dough evenly into your prepared baking pan.

  6. 6

Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.

  7. 7

While the base cools slightly, prepare the frosting by whisking together the melted butter, cocoa powder, vanilla, powdered sugar, and milk until smooth.

  8. 8

Pour the frosting over the bars while they are still warm and spread it out to the edges.

  9. 9

Place the pan in the refrigerator for at least an hour to let the frosting set before slicing into squares.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Store these bars in an airtight container in the refrigerator to keep them firm and fresh. They taste wonderful served cold, but you can also leave them out for ten minutes if you prefer a softer bite.
